Board Leadership Development Workshop - Introduction

This class serves to build the foundation to better understand the online program that CAI National offers.  The purpose of the class is to review fundamentals that board members need to know before they take the online program.  The online program goes more in depth.  Managers and homeowner leaders are encouraged to attend in order to gain insight, and a foundation, before recommending or taking the online program.

You may register for the online workshop course, and materials, by going to the following link: https://www.caionline.org/LearningCenter/Education-for-Homeowners/Pages/default.aspx.

If you choose to pay for the online portion of the program, you will be able to complete the online program on your own time and at your own pace.  We help get you going by offering this 2 hour live, classroom introduction program.  Please keep in mind that taking the online course is at your discretion and not mandatory to attend this class.

The toolbox is only given to those that register for the online course.  You do not need it for this introduction program.

Whether you live in a condominium, homeowners association (HOA) or other type of community, the Board Leadership Development Workshop highlights what every board member needs to know to serve effectively. The workshop consists of five modules:

    • Module 1: Governing Documents and Roles & Responsibilities. To start you on the right path, Module 1 helps you understand the legal authority for your association. It also clarifies the duties and responsibilities of each board member and the professionals who are available to assist the board.
    • Module 2: Communications, Meetings and Volunteerism. Module 2 helps you learn how to maximize volunteer involvement in your community association by improving board communications, conducting effective meetings and building community spirit.
    • Module 3: Fundamentals of Financial Management. Module 3 introduces the fundamentals of association financial management, including guidelines for protecting your association’s assets, preparing a budget, planning for the future and collecting assessments.
    • Module 4: Professional Advisors and Service Providers. Because putting together the right team to support your association can be challenging, Module 4 provides practical tips on finding, evaluating and hiring qualified professional advisors and service providers.
    • Module 5: Association Rules and Conflict Resolution. Module 5 explores guidelines for making reasonable association rules, enforcing rules fairly and resolving conflict effectively.

    Class Time: 2:00-3:00pm

Employment law has some very interesting ties to community association managers and associations. In mountain communities, and even in metropolitan areas, associations and management companies face interesting issues in how to staff on-site employees, oversee these employee’s duties, and manage the relationship between a board of directors and these employees. These practices create certain risk. What you don’t know can hurt you.

In this highly interactive program, presenter Wes Wollenweber will use real life common scenarios to examine best practices for managers and associations related to legal issues surrounding the sharing of staff employees, as well as best practices in hiring and supervising practices. This program will identify the legal exposure associations and management companies alike face from these common practices and provide guidance on how to better handle oversight of onsite staff.
